Suzanne Wallace Mears
Kiln Formed Glass

Artist's Statement - "Working with the medium of glass presents unending opportunities and challenges. It is making something beautiful out of something flat. My process is fused glass, not blown glass. Asking you to visualize this process, it is like building a dagwood sandwich. Through these last years my pieces have become increasingly larger and textural. More towards sculpture and not as much working towards the creation of functional pieces. I build the pieces in the kiln. The firing is up to 1450 degrees and takes 6 or 7 days to complete. I'm currently interested in transparency - light through the glass and the changes that occur during the day and night, bubbles trapped within the multiple layers of glass, texture created from the slow melting during the firing. My current works include the Eye of Magic, Stones and Spirit Series."

The Eye of Magic Series and Spirit Series

The Eye of Magic Series is some of Suzanne's latest work in Kiln Formed Glass.  "The mask is a many layered concept offering philosophical and artistic translation. It is tribal, primitive, mystical and magical. It is the tribes and people of our past. The concept offers unlimited opportunity to play with the power of imagination totally liberated from the straightjacket of realism. There is a dramatic and challenging design, energy, playfulness and unlimited opportunity for wandering and discovery."

The Sprit Series are the newest works.
