Suzanne Wallace Mears
Ceramics/Clay

"Clay is a medium I've worked in for over 25 years.  I'm a painter by education and want so I approach the clay from that perspective.  I use a slab roller and make my forms - I do not throw on the wheel.  This serves two mediums - I also make my mold forms for the slumping process in glass.  For many years I concentrated on a round flat form, plates and platters.  The goal was to see how many fresh conclusions I could create with the round form - like the large plates that are shown, I have sold over 7,000, each named, each unique.  Mostly, I work with lo-fire glazes/lo-fire clay, fire in electric kilns (no gas).  My pieces lean toward the functional but I've also created many pieces that are heavy bas-relief and non-functional.  The glaze part is particularly challenging and always a surprise.  The glazes have no relationship to the final color they will become in the firing so working with them is working with color and design in your head.  A piece takes anywhere from a week to months to complete."
